17th European Public Health Conference update
Dr Sara Leitao attended the 17th European Public Health Conference 2024 in Lisbon, Portugal from 13-15 November, presenting work from a range of projects. Sara presented findings from the PLACES project on workers’ experiences of pregnancy loss and a systematic review of healthcare professionals and students’ knowledge on termination of pregnancy. She also presented a poster on perinatal mortality in women in minority ethnic groups in Ireland (2011-2021), work which was led by Laura Robinson, a final year medical student at UCC, using data from the National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre (NPEC).
The conference brought together all aspects relating to Public Health from issues relating to sustainability, climate crisis, nutrition, healthy aging, infectious and communicable diseases and wellbeing at work, to emerging tools and challenges such as digital health, artificial intelligence and social marketing, amongst others.
While the motto was “Exploring a sea of innovation”, the focus was on a realistic approach to the challenges faced in Public and Global Health which exacerbate inequalities and broader access to health such as health literacy, commercial determinants of health and capitalization and privatisation of health policies.
Across the many thought-provoking and stimulating discussions, one of the main messages and calls for action was well encapsulated in the statement by Charlotte Marchandise (European Public Health Association (EUPHA) Executive Director) at her plenary speech: “Global Health and its advocates are facing ferocious adversaries and we need fierce fighters to face them”.
