Dr Noel O’Connell presents the Science Foundation Ireland – Irish Research Council funded CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) Project.

10 May 2024

UCC Futures: Children in collaboration with Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century welcomed Dr Noel O’Connell, to present on the Science Foundation Ireland – Irish Research Council funded CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) Project.

On Friday 10th May, the UCC Futures: Children Cluster, in collaboration with the Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century welcomed Dr Noel O’Connell, to present on the Science Foundation Ireland – Irish Research Council funded  CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) Project.

Professor Deirdre Horgan, who is a mentor on the project, introduced Dr Noel O’Connell who shared insights into the research, which explores the experiences of hearing children of deaf parents. Noel’s research background has focused on examining stigmas around deafness through a social justice lens. This project considers CODA’s experiences of ‘courtesy stigma’, how they are both overlooked and stigmatised by association with their parents' deafness. It will provide a platform for CODAs to share their experiences of how it impacts their childhoods and social identities.

The research implements an intersectional analysis. Seda Guekstasch, PhD student on the project, shared an introduction to the role of intersectionality in exploring how CODAs experience stigma and discrimination, and how this is impacted by other aspects of their identity such as age and gender.

The CODA project represents the first such research of its kind in Ireland, working collaboratively across jurisdictions and with civil society organisations. This research will create space and conversations for CODAs and aims to inform policy creation and practice developments in education and social work.
