3 Jun 2022

UCC Canoe Club have won Student Sport Ireland’s Event of the Year Award after hosting the organising the 2021-22 Irish Kayaking Intervarsities.

UCC Canoe Club have won Student Sport Ireland’s Event of the Year Award after hosting the organising the 2021-22 Irish Kayaking Intervarsities.

The event, which took place between February 18-20 was staged on the Lee Fields in Cork City, Ballyhass Lakes and Dunmanway.

In all, 332 competitors from 12 different kayaking clubs from across the island of Ireland took part in the event which raised €3,800 for the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.

A key objective for UCC Canoe Club was to increase the number of female competitors at the event, which they did by mandating that teams of six must include two women and by adopting an innovative method of awarding points. As a result, 45% of all participants were female.

Organising the Irish Kayaking Intervarsities was made more difficult due to the arrival of three named storms, Dudley, Eunice and Franklin, in the days preceding to the event.

The challenging weather conditions forced UCC Canoe Club to consult with authorities, including Met Eireann, UCC, Ambulance operators and the CEO of Canoeing Ireland.

In all, representatives from UCC Canoe Club held over 80 calls and meetings to ensure that the event was hosted safely.
