We were delighted to welcome over 120 GPs and HSE colleagues to University College Cork recently for ‘GP on the Quad Conference’ which took place at the Aula Maxima.

This inaugural conference hosted by the Department of General Practice UCC in partnership with the Cork postgraduate GP Training Scheme and HSE Primary Care Cork/Kerry focused on ‘Leadership and Capacity-building in General Practice’.

The event brought together more than 120 GPs from across the region to the beautiful surrounds of the Aula Maxima, where we heard from national and regional leaders in general practice and primary care.

Highlights included updates on progress to date on the implementation of integrated community care across the region and a panel discussion with emerging and established GP and primary care leaders.

Prof. Emma Wallace, Head of Department of General Practice, UCC said the conference highlights "the importance of and potential for partnerships in GP education and research regionally and nationally to support health service delivery to optimise patient care.

"We were delighted to welcome Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP)/HSE national clinical leads to University College Cork to give clinical updates on ADHD, diabetes therapeutics and women's health".

Prof. Tony Foley, Department of General Practice said: “This unique gathering is important and timely too.  It fosters collegiality, collaborative practice and crucially helps us to engage and support our GP colleagues who offer wonderful supervision to our medical students whilst out on clinical placement in general practice'.

Prof. Foley thanked the many speakers for their contributions, the student volunteers, the administrative team from the Department of General Practice and the Conference UCC team for helping to make this event so memorable.

Prof. Helen Whelton, Head of the College of Medicine and Health UCC and Chair of the National Chief Academic Officer (CAO) Group thanked the organisers and everyone for attending,

“It is great to come together like this, have these discussions on GP Community Healthcare, mental health, female health, lessons in leadership in primary care. A healthcare environment and service that supports and values education, training, innovation and research is foundational to the provision of high quality and cost-effective patient care”.
