Chelsea Nwankwo presented 'Barriers and Enablers to Attendance at Structured Diabetes Education Programmes: A Systematic Review' at the CoMH Research Conference 2024.

The research focused on understanding the factors that shape attendance at diabetes education programmes.
The poster presentation synthesises evidence on the barriers and enablers influencing attendance at structured diabetes education programmes among adults with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Drawing on nine qualitative studies and guided by the Theoretical Domains Framework, the review identifies a range of factors, including limited awareness, logistical challenges, emotional concerns, and perceived stigma, that can deter individuals from attending.
It also identifies key enablers that can drive greater attendance - such as clear positive reinforcement from healthcare providers, easier access to sessions, and a better understanding of the long-term benefits. These findings can inform targeted strategies, ensuring that structured diabetes education becomes more accessible, relevant, and ultimately more effective in supporting diabetes self-management.
