Bystander Intervention Programme

The Bystander Intervention programme at UCC forms part of a strategic response to the issues of sexual misconduct and violence among young people and student populations. The project aims to highlight the danger of normalising and unacceptable accepting abusive behaviour and through education, inform and empower programme participants to better understand their capacity to intervene as pro-social bystanders.

Abstract

The blended learning programme is offered as a Digital Badge micro-credential to all students at UCC.  Students undertake 6 online modules at their own pace (1. Introducing the Bystander 2. Social Norms 3. Sexual Violence 4. Relationship Violence 5. Bystander Intervention).  Once participants complete the online training, they attend a facilitated scenario workshops to explore a range of scenarios which enables them to develop responsibility and capacity to make a wide range of effective and safe interventions. To complete their digital badge training, participants submit a reflective learning piece.  The post completion research and testimonials are consistent in reflecting the efficacy of the programme in achieving it’s aims.

Bystander Intervention training has also been made available to institutions across the sector to support the experiences of young people studying and researching in Irish third level institutions.
