Two new Adjunct Professors for School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology
The University has sanctioned the appointment of two new Adjunct Professors to the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology.
Julie O’Neill
Julie O’Neill is a BSc Pharmacy Graduate of Trinity College Dublin and holds an MBA from Smurfit Business School. She is presently Senior Vice President, Global Manufacturing Operations and General Manager for Ireland at Alexion Pharma based in Dublin. Julie has held several senior appointments in the Pharma sector over the last 25 years including VP Operations and General Manager for Ireland at Gilead Sciences, MD of Burnil Pharmacies and Plant Manager for Helsinn-Birex Pharmaceuticals.
Amongst her previous prestigious roles, Julie has served on UCC’s Governing Body, was President of IBEC, Chair of PharmaChemical Ireland, and served on the advisory board of the Crann Institute (Trinity College Dublin). She is presently Chair of the National Standards Authority of Ireland. Julie will contribute to several programmes in this School and will especially focus on preparing our students for potential careers in the BioPharma Sector.
Dr Donagh Berry
Dr Donagh Berry holds a BSc (Agricultural Sciences) from UCD, MSc in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology (UCC) and PhD (2003;UCD and Wageningen). After his PhD, he joined Teagasc as a dairy and beef geneticist and is presently Principal Dairy and Beef Research Geneticist at Teagasc, Moorepark, Co. Cork, where he supervises a very active research programme. Donagh spent a sabbatical leave year 2004/5 in New Zealand on commercialising his research and his principal research interests are in bovine genetics and in the commercial exploitation of genomic information.
In 2013, he was recipient of The British Society of Animal Science Sir John Hammond award for significant contributions to animal science research. Donagh contributes his animal genetics expertise as a Lecturer in Quantitative Genetics to UCC’s BSc in Genetics and also lectures on Animal Genetics for UCD’s Dairy Science degree programme. He is author of > 150 peer-reviewed publications and has supervised 3 MScs and 8 PhDs to graduation.
In 2011 Donagh was a member of the International Committee of Animal Recording expert working group on parentage testing, and expert group for animal breeding and genetics for EU Farm Animal Breeding and Genetics Technology Platform. He is a member of the International industry and Scientific advisory committee for University of Alberta, Canada, ingenuity centre for livestock genomics technology. As Adjunct Professor, Donagh will continue to contribute strongly to this School’s very successful joint BSc in Genetics (with the School of Microbiology).
