UCC Jennings Gallery and College of Medicine and Health partnered with US-based non-profit organization Visual Thinking Strategies ( www.vtshome.org )  to deliver 'looking at art' classes to students across the five schools of Medicine and Health. Two of VTS top facilitators, Yoon Kang O Higgins- (National Program Director) and Karin De Santis (Aesthetic Development Director) visited Cork in May 2012 to host a public seminar and to start the training programme for the College staff, who facilitate the VTS programme.

In October 2013, Visual Thinking Strategies was introduced to the medical school at UCC, the first European medical school to use VTS in medical training. Six one-hour VTS sessions were delivered to third year medical students. These sessions were again delivered to current third year students in 2014. Teaching was facilitated by trained VTS facilitators from Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Clinical Therapies, in addition to medical school staff trained in VTS facilitation. This inter-disciplinary teaching was necessary because of the large numbers of students in third year.

The VTS programme was well-received by the medical students. Attendance was high (voluntary attendance). The interdisciplinary nature of the programme led to facilitator debriefing sessions and facilitators from all schools in CoMH found the experience to be a very positive and enjoyable one. Such was the collective enthusiasm that we decided to explore further training (level 2) in VTS to improve our VTS facilitation skills. The enthusiasm of the facilitators also prompted us to carry out a study on the perceived benefits of VTS for the facilitators themselves, as we all felt that we had gained from the experience (listening, observation, observing and understanding group dynamics).

The results of this study were presented at AMEE Annual International Conference (Association for Medical Education in Europe) 2014 in Milan on 31st August 2014 by Dr Bridget Maher.

The findings were  presented as a short presentation at the Irish Paediatric Association/Irish/American Paediatric Society Annual Conference on 26th September 2014 by Dr Bridget Maher.
