National Army Soldier Joseph Ryan

National Army Soldier Joseph Ryan (aged 19 or 20) of Douglas Bridge, Kilworth (Kilworth Camp)

Date of incident: 6 March 1923

Sources: CE, 9 March 1923, 6 March 1924; National Army Census, 12-13 Nov. 1922 (BMH, Military Archives).

Note: Private Joseph Ryan was ‘killed by a discharge from a rifle, 6th March 1923, aged 19 years’, according to a memorial notice published in the Cork Examiner of 6 March 1924 by his still grieving parents, sisters, and a brother. See CE, 6 March 1924. Confirming this notice at the time of Ryan’s death was a very brief statement in the Cork Examiner of 9 March 1923 indicating that ‘Volunteer’ Ryan had been ‘accidentally killed at Kilworth by the discharge of a comrade’s rifle’. See CE, 9 March 1923. Ryan had joined the National Army on 14 October 1922, according to his attestation document. His mother was Mary Ryan, and his home address was Douglas Bridge, Kilworth, Co. Cork. See National Army Census, 12-13 Nov. 1922 (BMH, Military Archives).
