The Traveller Court Supports Initiative visit Washington St, Courthouse for a tour of the historic building by Mary-Clare Kearney. 

The TCSI which is an exciting project, provides six Traveller women with legal training and courtroom experience. The aim of which is to provide culturally-appropriate peer support workers, who will act as 'court buddies' for other Travellers taking civil or family cases to the courts. 

The TCSI is the first such programme in Ireland to be codesigned and advanced in partnership with Traveller organisation partners in Cork, the Court Service and the School of Law, UCC. In providing and training culturally-appropriate court support workers, the TCSI seeks to respond to the barriers to justice experienced by Traveller litigants within the civil system.

Travellers have legal issues the same as everybody else, and getting legal help can be complicated for everyone. We know that for Travellers it can be particularly hard to find a solicitor to help, particularly who has experience with Traveller discrimination cases.    

The Traveller Equality & Justice Project welcomes the establishment of the ‘Civil Legal Aid Review Group’ by Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee.

Last week the TEJP launched our latest report 'Barriers to Justice for Travellers Seeking to Challenge Discrimination: Mapping Traveller 'Rediscrimination' within the Equality System'. The report is now available to read online here.   

Next Friday 29th April at 9:30 in G01 Brookfield Health Science Complex in UCC, the TEJP will host an event launching our report 'Barriers to Justice for Travellers Seeking to Challenge Discrimination: Mapping Traveller 'Rediscrimination' within the Equality System'.

Ireland is in the midst of a severe and prolonged housing crisis which has affected every facet of society. However, the effects of this general housing crisis upon the provision and supply of Traveller accommodation has reached critical levels.

The TEJP welcomes the Supreme Court’s landmark decision to overturn a High Court interlocutory injunction granted to Clare County Council, requiring a Traveller family to vacate lands they had been residing at for several years.
