2023 Timeline

January

  • Irene Ní Shúilleabháin joined the team as the Greens shoots coordinator. Irene's role focusses on engaging students with green space to promote further engagement with sustainability and climate action. 

February

  • We officially launched SDSN Ireland with our co-hosts Queen's University Belfast. SDSN Ireland is a North-South cooperative network focused on implementaition of the SDGs. 

March

  • Green week took place in March. This was a collaborative effort between UCC Envirosoc, UCC SU and Green Campus. Events included clothing mend and repair, a nature and foraging walk and a biodiversity trail. 

April

  • We took home the "Excellence in Sustainability" award at the Irish Education Awards 2023, after being named the best Green Campus at the same awards in 2021. 

May

  • Dr John Barimo joins the office as SDSN manager. John previously worked on the SDG toolkit project with Green Campus and CIRTL and as Engaged Research Officer in the UCC Research Office. 

June

  • This month saw the official launch of our Sustainability and Climate Action plan by Finance Minister Michael McGrath. The plan details 62 actions across 9 key areas and commits us to achieve net zero by 2040. 

July

  • UCC is named the Most Sustainable Institution in the World at the International Green Gown Awards, which were announced at the UN High Level Political Forum in New York. 

August

  • Daniel Carr joined the office as Research Support Officer on two newly funded Erasmus+ projects. Daniel previously worked in Cork City's Climate Action unit. 

September

  • Students arriving in September were greeted by the complete removal of disposable cups from the Student Centre and all KSG outlets. In total the initiative has prevented over 1 million cups from going to waste. 

October

  • Climate action week took place in October, a collaboration between Green Campus, Societies and STAND. Events included a climate comedy gig, language and land connection and a societies-led environmental activisim evening. 

November

  • Together with academics from the ERI, we developed and delivered two sessions in Climate Leadership for the University's Leadership Team as part of UCC's commitment under the national Climate Action Plan 2023. 

December

  • An official delgation attends COP28 summit in Dubai as observers. This year three UCC badges were distributed to MAPA delegates. UCC is also ranked the 6th most sustainable university in the world.
