Ecocritical Encounters: Women and Nature in Galician and Irish Cultural Production

Wednesday 3rd – Thursday 4th May 2017

In recent years, the deterioration of the environment and the extent –and frequency– of ecological disasters have increased dramatically, and so have the cultural and creative responses to this ongoing degradation of the natural world. As an academic discipline, ecocriticism provides analytical tools for the examination of cultural responses to environmental concerns. This symposium aims to facilitate the discussion of different forms of engagement with ecocritical matters in relation to Galician and Irish cultural production, including literature, film, visual arts and other forms. We encourage comparative views and creative responses to environmental issues with particular emphasis on ecofeminist approaches, but other critical stances are also welcome.

As well as the presentation of research papers, the symposium will feature a variety of other events and activities, including a film screening, a round table discussion and a poetry reading. We invite contributions from scholars and creative practitioners (writers, artists, etc.). Please send your abstract (max. 200 words) for a 20-minute paper and a brief biographical note to Dr Martín Veiga (m.veiga@ucc.ie) by Wednesday 15th March 2017.

Thematic areas may include, but are not limited to, the following:
