The 2024 School of Engineering Prizegiving showcased the breadth of talent among UCC’s engineering students.

A number of awards were made possible thanks to generous sponsorship and philanthropic support, demonstrating the commitment of our industry partners and donors to nurturing student success in this field. We are grateful for their continued support.

Four of the awards at this year’s prizegiving were kindly supported by Qualcomm Ireland. These included; The Qualcomm Most Promising Electrical/Electronic Engineer Award, jointly awarded to Ferghal Desmond and Luke Ennis; the inaugural Qualcomm EEE Excellence Award, which was awarded to Leah Twomey; the Qualcomm Excellence to the Community by an Electrical Engineering Student Award, which was awarded to Klaudia Serafin. Qualcomm were also this year's sponsors of the Engineering Postgraduate Research Publication of the Year Award, which was won by Jiaxiang Zhu for the paper: “Modelling of a General Lumped Compliance Beam for Compliant Mechanisms.”

The Dr Paul Cahill Memorial Prize is in memory of Dr Paul Cahill who died in August 2022. Donated by Paul’s family, this prize honors Paul’s commitment to research and learning by recognising an outstanding dissertation in the BE/ME in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. This year’s recipient is Daniel O’Callaghan.

The Professor Gerard Wrixon Prize in Electrical & Electronic Engineering is awarded to the student that graduates top of their class in the ME in Electrical & Electronic Engineering. This year’s recipient is Conor Moloney.

The Statkraft Awards in Energy Engineering were won by Aoibheann Maxwell, Thomas Beese and Tommaso Batori. These awards are made to the BE Energy Engineering students who achieve the highest overall marks in the examinations across 2nd, 3rd and 4th years of the programme.

John Mac Carthy and his wife Geraldine established The John Joseph McCarthy Prize in Civil & Environmental Engineering in memory of John’s father Mr John Joseph McCarthy (BE 1947). It is offered to the final year students of Civil and Environmental Engineering who have contributed significantly to sport at UCC. This year’s recipient is Aisling Murphy Cassidy.

The CEIA gathers over 50 companies in the Cork Area, various relevant State Agencies and the Higher Education Institutions of Munster. The Prize is awarded to the student that graduates top of class in the 4-year BE in Electrical & Electronic Engineering (highest final aggregate marks), consisting of a medal and a parchment.

Sean Coombes won The Horner Best Poster Award which is an inaugural prize for Electrical and Electronic Engineering BE Capstone Project as part of the Annual Bachelor of Engineering (BE) Project Open Day in the Discipline. The runners-up are Aisling McEvoy and Leyi Huang. The award is coordinated by Prof. Nabeel Riza. Horner are the global leaders in the design and manufacture of factory automation control solutions.
