Our 2024 Inaugural Professorial Lecture Series began with a fascinating talk entitled "How do (exo-)planets form?" by Professor Bertram Bitsch, School of Physics, UCC.

Professor Bitsch joins us from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg, Germany, where he and his team studied how planets can form in different disc environments through hydrodynamical and N-body simulations.

As well as teaching, he will be leading research in the following areas: astrophysics, planet formation, hydrodynamical, and N-body simulations.

In this lecture, Professor Bitsch reviewed how our current status of exoplanet detections and current understanding on how planets can form in their natal birth environments - the so call protoplanetary discs consisting of gas and dust orbiting newly born stars.

Thank you to Professor Bitsch for an engaging and informative lecture and we welcome him to the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science.
