In the wee hours of the morning on July 29th, 2021, Quercus Scholar, Paul O'Donovan, and his partner, Fintan McCarthy, broke history by winning Ireland's first ever rowing Gold.
In a real edge of the seat final, Germany started down the course like bats out of hell and stayed in front for three quarters of the race. However, Paul & Fintan stuck to their game-plan and lowered the hammer in the final quarter to out row the Germans to gold. The race finished with Ireland in Gold, Germany in Silver & Italy in Bronze.
Paul, who has been a Quercus Scholar since 2018, studies Graduate Entry Medicine and Fintan is a Graduate of Physiology. We congratulate them both heartily and thank them for making it a summer to remember.
