Transforming Education with 'WIL': Strategic Quality Enhancement Project

UCC welcomed Dr Karsten Zegwaard to share expertise on Work-Integrated Learning as part of a Strategic Quality Enhancement Project
The QEU, along with Ms Clodagh Kerr, WIL Project Manager, were delighted to host Dr Karsten Zegwaard, Director of Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) Research at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. The visit took place on campus from 18th – 19th June and highlighted the importance of integrating work experiences with academic learning.
Dr Zegwaard chaired the Thematic Review of work placements in 2020, which was commissioned by the Deputy President and Registrar and the Director of the Student Experience. The findings highlighted a shift from traditional work placement to the globally recognised ‘WIL’ approach, expanding learning opportunities for students.
During the visit, Dr Zegwaard delivered a masterclass on the definition of WIL, design of quality WIL frameworks and the different models of WIL such as curricular, co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Furthermore, he shared valuable international perspectives, discussing developments from various countries including New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and Germany. Discussions included the critical role of WIL in enhancing employability outcomes for students and detailing the University of Waikato’s approach to integrating WIL into their curriculum, which includes compulsory WIL components across all disciplines.
In addition to the masterclass, Dr Zegwaard's schedule included a series of open clinics with representatives from across UCC. These sessions allowed UCC staff to discuss good practices and explore potential collaborations in WIL.
The visit highlighted UCC's commitment to enhancing the quality of its educational offerings by integrating practical work experiences, thereby better preparing students for the workplace.
