School of Nursing and Midwifery Success at 2023 UCC Research and Innovation Awards

The School of Nursing and Midwifery was very well represented on Wednesday 29th May at the 2023 University College Research and Innovation Awards, held in Devere Hall. Researchers were awarded across twenty-two categories, six of which recognise specific achievements in entrepreneurship and innovation.

  • Professor Nicola Cornally was part of the UCC’s Dementia Palliative Care Research Team who received the award for Research Team of the year. The team, comprising of members of UCC academic staff, researchers and clinicians from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Medicine, Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation, Department of General Practice, Cork University Business School, South-Southwest Hospital Group, and St. Luke’s Nursing Home have collaborated on dementia palliative care research to improve quality of life and of end-of-life care for those in the advanced stages of dementia.
  • Professor Patricia Leahy-Warren and the PEEB (Practice Enhancement for Exclusive Breastfeeding) who received an award for Engaged Research of the year. Team members include clinical midwifery, nursing, obstetric, neonatal, General Practitioners (GP), public health (PHN), community nursing, and public patient partners (PPI), i.e. breastfeeding mothers and their partners. The focus of their research is raising awareness for breastfeeding nationally so that societies can reap these benefits, leading to healthier, happier communities.
  • Dr Elaine Lehane was nominated for the above 2 awards and also as Research Supervisor of the Year.
  • Dr Mohamad Saab was also nominated for the award of research team of the year and for the category of Research Communicator of the Year.
