Medicine and Health Annual Research Day 2011

Over 100 registrants gathered for UCC’s College of Medicine and Health Annual Research Day in Brookfield Health Sciences Complex on Wednesday 22nd June 2011. The topic was Women’s and Child Health.

There were 3 themes, each with a Keynote Speaker and three research presentations.

The themes and keynote speakers were:

1.    Foetal and Neonatal Health (Dr. Janet M Rennie University College Hospital London )
2.    Paediatrics (Dr. Colm O’Donnell, National Children’s Research Centre, Crumlin)
3.    Women’s Health (Prof. Fionnuala Mc Auliffe, National Maternity Hospital Holles Street and UCD Institute of Food and Health)

From each theme, a winning presentation was chosen by the keynote speakers and the presenter was awarded the Michael C. Berndt Gold Medal for Research Innovation.

The Gold Medal Winners were:

Evonne Low Effect of therapeutic hypothermia on electrographic seizure burden in term neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy

Ciara Mc Carthy A longitudinal cohort study of transepidermal water loss in the first six months of life as a predictor of atopic dermatitis

Fred English Blocking poly (adp-ribose) polymerase in animal models of pre-eclampsia protects against the hallmarks of pre-eclampsia

The keynote speakers commented on the excellence of the presentations and the very high quality of the research underpinning them.

A parallel poster event took place and over 80 posters were on display. Following judging, three posters were awarded prizes:

1st Prize: The Temporal Evolution of Electrographic Seizure Burden in Neonatal Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy: Lynch, NE; Stevenson N; Livingstone V; Boylan GB - UCC Neonatal Brain Research Group, Cork University Maternity Hospital, Cork
2nd Prize:
Ambiguity and Aphasia: A homophone lexical decision study : Hutch, W1, Leonard, U1, Oliveira, A1, Pettigrew, C1, Fourie, R1  -1Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences, University College Cork, Ireland
3rd Prize:
Serum levels of inflammatory cytokines as a marker of progression of labour in normal term human pregnancy : Leahy D1, Calleja-Agius J2, Suri S2, Jauniaux E2, Muttukrishna S3
