UCC Academic appointed Specialist Adviser to UK House of Commons Committee

Dr Maeve Conrick, Dean of Arts, Vice Head, College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences (Department of French), has accepted an invitation to act as Specialist Adviser to the UK House of Commons Welsh Affairs Committee.
The Committee has a forthcoming inquiry into the proposed Welsh Language Legislative Competence Order, which is seeking a transfer of the powers to legislate on the Welsh language from Westminster to the National Assembly for Wales. Dr Conrick has been invited to provide specialist advice to the Committee because of her significant expertise in the area of Language Policy and Language Rights in Canada, Ireland and France.

Dr Conrick is an expert in the field of Linguistics (especially of French and English) and is recognised internationally as a leading sociolinguist and an authoritative expert on the linguistics of Canada. She has held positions on the Executive Committee of several international professional associations, including President of the Association for Canadian Studies in Ireland and Treasurer of the European Second Language Association. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Association internationale des études québécoises (International Association for Québec Studies). Her contribution to Québec Studies was recognised by the award of the Prix du Québec by the Québec Government. She has published widely in books, articles in international journals and book chapters. Recent publications include: French in Canada: Language Issues (Oxford, Peter Lang, 2007) and The Challenges of Linguistic Duality for Francophone Canada: contact, conflict and continuity, in International Journal of Francophone Studies (2006).
