University College Cork (UCC) offers new Management Course for Community Workers
06.02.2008

A new part-time Masters Degree in Third Sector Management for community and voluntary sector workers is being offered by UCC starting September 2008.
The course is aimed at experienced practitioners who currently manage/co-ordinate provision within the Third Sector, i.e. voluntary and community organisations.  Participants will be able to combine their studies with their work in a user-friendly way.

The two-year programme is intended to enable practitioners to further develop their expertise, analytical understanding of the relationship between the state and civil society, and professional management capabilities, through a challenging and supportive learning environment.

UCC is the only university in Ireland to offer such a course which will be taught by the Department of Applied Social Studies in association with seven other UCC departments. According to Professor Fred Powell, Head, Applied Social Studies Department at UCC, "the course will draw on a range of academic disciplines and inter-professional approaches and will be underpinned by values of equality and social justice.  Community workers will learn about management, organisation and governance, financial planning, legal structures, social and economic policy and government structures."

Professor Powell explained that from the late 1980s there has been a significant growth in community/voluntary organisations in Ireland both to implement new policies and programmes on the ground but also to act as a platform for advocacy and change in an increasingly diversifying society.  "With this have come new needs and challenges for the community sector, including training and educational needs linked to developing the sector itself, developing models of good practice, promoting participation and enhancing democracy", he said.

The new course will be taught one day per week over two years and the closing date for applications is Friday, February 29th 2008.

Further information on this programme is available online on http://www.ucc.ie/en/CKE75 or by contacting Professor Fred Powell at the Department of Applied Social Studies, UCC, (T) 021 4902593.
