The Great Debate: "Amateurism and Professionalism in Sport in Ireland"
31.01.2008

A panel consisting of some of Ireland's greatest authorities on sport will come together at UCC on Wednesday, February 6th to debate the issue of amateurism and professionalism in Irish Sport.

Hosted by the UCC Sports Studies and Physical Education Community Lecture Series, the panel consists of Seán Fogarty (Former Chairman, Munster Council of the GAA); Christy Cooney (Chairman, National Coaching & Games Development, GAA and former Chairman, Munster Council of the GAA); Tom Humphries (Sports Writer and Columnist, Irish Times); Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh (Irish Gaelic Games Commentator for RTE) and Patrick Duffy (CEO Sports Coach UK, the National Coaching Foundation) plus other leading figures in the world of Sport.

This lecture is the second in a series of lectures on sport and takes the form of a debate. Organized under the aegis of UCC's Department of Education BEd Sports and Physical Education Degree Programme, the purpose of the series is to explore the way forward for sport in the Irish community. UCC established the Bachelor of Education in Sports Studies and Physical Education in 2006 under the directorship of Dr Julia Walsh.  The programme has a strong focus on health and the role physical education and sport play in maintaining physiological and psychological well being.

Commenting on the forthcoming debate, Dr Julia Walsh explained: "Amateurism and professionalism in sport always has been a highly emotive topic.  The terms lack clarification, hence one of the objectives of the debate is to help the Irish public come to a better understanding of what the terms mean and what it means for Irish sport.  This debate brings together people who have had significant experience in sport form a range of different perspectives and this should make for increased understanding and bring new insights to this complex topic."

The debate takes place at University College Cork on Wednesday, February 6th at 7.30 pm in the Boole III Lecture Theatre. Members of the public are invited to attend and admission is free.
