Debating the Big Issues - Public Lecture by Senator David Norris



The outspoken and often-controversial senator, David Norris, will deliver the 2006/2007 Philip Monahan Memorial Lecture on Monday, 12 March at UCC. The lecture titled "The Big Issues" will cover a wide range of topics from Celtic Tiger Ireland to climate change to the War in Iraq.

The 2006/2007 Philip Monahan Memorial Lecture is organised by UCC's Department of Government in honour of Philip Monahan who served as Cork City Manager from 1929-1959. This is the 8th year of the Monahan Lecture and previous speakers have included John Hume, Francesco Rutelli, David Begg and Mary McAleese.

Senator Norris has promised to touch on a broad range of topics, including Celtic Tiger Ireland, foreign policy, global climate change, western values, the war in Iraq, CIA rendition, the Geneva Conventions, Tony Blair and George W. Bush.

During the evening the following student awards will be presented:

  • Government Student of the Year
  • Government Graduate of the Year
  • Patrick O'Sullivan Essay Winner
The lecture takes place on Monday, 12 March, at 7pm in Room G01, Brookfield Health Sciences Complex, College Road. Members of the public are invited to attend and admission is free.
