CoMH Learning and Teaching Showcase 2024

Climate change and Healthy Ageing, the lived experiences of college students with ADHD from an occupational perspective, medication safety, exploring new horizons in anatomy education through virtual reality, just some of the many topics which featured at the College of Medicine and Health Learning and Teaching Showcase 2024. 

Head of College Professor Helen Whelton thanked all those involved in organising this year’s event: “It is very exciting to have this opportunity to showcase the fantastic learning and teaching going on across the College, great to showcase the fantastic innovations, technological developments that will transform learning and teaching in the future”.  

Professor Mark McEntee, Vice-Head for Learning and Teaching at the College of Medicine and Health said: “This showcase is an exceptional platform to highlight the remarkable advancements in teaching and learning methodolgies across the college, celebrates and spotlights the excellent teaching and learning that is taking place. It is a great opportunity to share knowledge, see the great participation levels within the college".  

The event featured talks, presentations and poster presentations reflecting the variety of teaching practices evident across CoMH.

Deputy President and Registrar Prof. Stephen Byrne and Prof. Paul McSweeney, Vice-President for Learning and Teaching UCC opened the event. Keynote speaker was Michael Cronin, Clinical Industrial Liaison Officer at Assert Centre.

The first session chaired by Prof. Mark McEntee explored the topic ‘simulation is learning’ also ‘mapping inclusion in Health Professionals’.  

The second session chaired by Dr, Sonja Vucen looked at Interprofessional learning for first year health and social care students.  

A third session chaired by Dr. Maria O’Malley looked at lived experiences of medical students displaced by the war in Ukraine, student perceptions of oral presentations and public speaking and evaluating the feasibility of a simulation-based self-harm assessment and management training programme for healthcare professionals in Ireland, simulation as a complex training intervention: the need for theory informed curriculum design.
