Role of Geographical Indicators in the Irish Food and Drink Industry: Opportunities and Challenges

Summary

The webinar entitled "Role of Geographical Indicators in the Irish Food and Drink Industry: Opportunities and Challenges" which took place on March 1st 2024, discussed the characteristics of Geographical Indications and  the opportunities and challenges for Irish producers with EU protected food names schemes.

Identification of origin has become increasingly important with consumers wanting to know where their food comes from and how it is produced. EU Geographic indication schemes (PDO/PGI/TSG) provide assurance to consumers about quality and origin of food and drink products from Europe and are increasingly used as food ambassadors in 3rd country markets. GI products rooted in specific geographic areas, have proven to be an effective sustainability tool encouraging biodiversity and the protection of the environment and form an important part of the transformation with EU Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategy.
