Vatican's diplomacy, relations with non-Catholic religions and the Yugoslav concordat

Abstract: In the interwar period, Poe Pius XI introduced a concordat policy, particularly to protect the Catholic minorities and solidify the position of the Catholic Church vis-a-vis the State authorities.  Especially important were the legal agreements with Italy and Germany that mirror the compliance of the Pope to negotiate also with authoritarian and totalitarian regimes.  The political situation and interreligious relations in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, however, for years hindered the concordat negotiations, and after the agreement was finally signed in 1935, followed an open revolt instigated by the Serbian Orthodox Church and all oppositional political parties.  The revocation of the concordat in the country with a considerably large Catholic minority was just another case of growing radicalization of beliefs and mass mobilization in the 1930s all over Europe.
