At first I thought I’d choose the biology route and then fell in love with chemistry and so I’m delighted that we were given the freedom to explore. We got the opportunity to make aspirin in one of our labs, and it was particularly interesting to see the process that goes into such an everyday item. It fascinated me and convinced me that chemistry was really right for me. What I really like about chemistry is that it is not all theory, there’s a lot of problem solving and maths involved, two things I’ve always loved.
Dr. Louise Shanahan
My love of chemistry came from secondary school. The best advice I got was when I was in 6th year, I was told to do a broad science course and get a taste of all the sciences. The work placement associated with CPC allowed me to apply the science I learned from my degree, to an industrial environment.
Eleanor Townsend
As a British national, I chose UCC to study for my undergraduate degree because the course is unique, and contains the perfect balance of chemistry and forensic science. The school has great resources and the staff were always very supportive. I really enjoyed my time there and I would definitely recommend UCC if you are interested in studying a Chemistry course.
Luke Daly
UCC is a great college with fantastic facilities in a great city. It is also the only college in the country (and only one of a handful in the world) to offer a course in Chemical Physics. The course offers an excellent balance between theory and practical. For example at one point you’ll be learning about reactions that occur in the atmosphere or perhaps the implications of quantum mechanics and the next thing you know, you’re in the lab using lasers to analyse a sample or building a circuit board from scratch. There is something for everyone with a passion for science in this course.
Hock Ming Gan
UCC was my first choice because it is recognised as a leading research institute in Ireland. I found that the staff in the School of Chemistry were friendly and caring towards the students. The lecturers also created an enjoyable learning environment for the students. In addition, the School of Chemistry is fully equipped with advance facilities and instruments for teaching and research purposes.
