28 January - From Baudelaire through Picasso to Sartre: Scenes from the lives of the demonic avant-guarde

Professor Arpad Szakolczai

Department of Sociology and Criminology

Tuesday, 28th January 6-7pm
Askive 0.01 (Sociology and Criminology Department building on Donovan Road)

Presented by Professor Szakolczai, UCC Sociology and Criminology Department. Abstract for the seminar:

Given the mess we all are in, globally, in every level and in every sense, the ideology of progress is no longer tenable. A main question now concerns the manner in which this ideology was spread, and the mode of operation of its principal agents. This seminar will place the emphasis on some aspects of the cultural avant-guarde, but also offering some hints concerning the interpenetration, not just with the political avant-guarde, but the economic-capitalistic and scientific-technological avant-guarde as well. At the end, the question will be raised concerning how one can start to think about a way out - if there is any left."
