Shannon Quilty, 4th year Biochemistry, UCC; Grace O’Mahony, 4th year Biomedical Science, UCC & CIT: Dr Ken Nally, School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology & APC Microbiome Institute, University College Cork.

Shannon Quilty (4th year Biochemistry, UCC) received a Wellcome Trust Biomedical Vacation Scholarship and Grace O’Mahony (4th year Biomedical Science, UCC & CIT) received a HRB Summer Studentship Award to spend 8 weeks during the past summer in the research group of Dr Ken Nally, School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and APC Microbiome Institute, UCC.

The students investigated the differential expression of select immuno-regulatory genes in Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

Ongoing research in Dr Nally’s group is  focussed on gaining a deeper understanding into the pathophysiological mechanisms underpinning IBS and IBD with the goal of identifying new therapeutic strategies for these conditions.
