Summer Placement Seminars - Peer Support at a First Class Level

Placement seminars by fourth year Biochemistry, Biomedical Science and Genetics students were held on Tuesday 8th and Tuesday 15th October for third year students.

At the first seminar Céilí Cowan and Ellen Olden discussed the Amgen Scholars programme and the Amgen Symposium. Both students conducted eight weeks research projects at Cambridge.

Aisling Bukulin, Colm Doyle, Sarah-Kate O ConnorNatasha Steidel discussed how they secured their APC Summer Student Bursaries and the projects they conducted.

John Fehilly and William O’Dwyer discussed the application processes for a Biochemical Society Summer Vacation Studentship and the Biomedical Summer Studentship - Irish Research Council, respectively. John conducted his research under the supervision of Dr Kellie Dean and William worked under the supervision of Dr Sharon McKenna, Cork Cancer Research Centre, UCC. 

Niamh Casey and Kornelia Dembicka were both recipients of SEFS Summer Research Bursaries and Niamh conducted her project with Dr Fleming’s research team and Kornelia conducted her project with Dr Young’s research team.

The School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology also provided Summer Vacation Studentships and these were discussed by two of the recipients Ian O Shea and Amy Gillick who were supervised by Dr Eoin Fleming and Dr Ken Nally, respectively.

Orla Skillington secured a summer research position with Professor Catherine Stanton, Teagasc, Moorepark and Orla really enjoyed her research experience off campus.

Rachel Mc Cusker and Jennifer Murphy discussed their Pharmaceutical placements at The Binding Site Group Ltd., Birmingham and BioMarin, respectively.

Dr Sinéad Kerins would like to thank all the students for delivering excellent presentations and providing the 3rd year students with information and advice.
