Rahel Fitzel, a student at the Universität Ulm in Germany, completed a 10-week Erasmus+ research traineeship, under the supervision of Dr Kellie Dean in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology

Rahel is currently completing a bachelor’s degree in Molecular Medicine, a programme that trains students in scientific subjects and supplies them with a medical background. During her time at UCC, Rahel’s research project was to create tagged-versions of proteins that have been identified to interact with an RNA-binding protein associated with two forms of muscular dystrophy. Rahel succeeded in doing this and was instrumental in advancing the work, stating that she had “the most amazing time” in the lab and that she “could not have found a better internship!

Ongoing research in Dr Dean’s group is focused on identifying and characterizing RNA-protein complexes implicated in human diseases like cancer, muscular dystrophies and neurodegeneration.
