Study completes most in-depth mapping of healthy gut bacteria transfer from mother to infant
12 Jun 2023Highlights the important factors in gut bacteria transfer including vaginal birth and avoidance of intrapartum antibiotics; signals the potential role of supplements in transferring probiotic benefits from mother to infant.
Researchers have completed the most in-depth investigation to date of mother-to-infant transmission of common gut bacteria. The study reveals the effective transfer of the gut bacteria Bifidobacterium, a major component of health from infancy through to adulthood.

Irish scientists and clinicians use AI analysis of the gut microbiome to detect colon cancer
06 Jun 2023APC Microbiome Ireland together with BowelScreen, the National Colorectal Cancer Screening service, and Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in new international AI project - ‘Microb-AI-ome’ – to increase sensitivity and reduce ‘false-positive’ rates in colorectal cancer screening
APC Microbiome Ireland, a world-leading SFI research centre based at UCC (University College Cork), has joined forces with BowelScreen and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, as part of 8 partner organisations from 5 European countries involved in the new Microb-AI-ome project launched in May of this year. Led by Prof. Dr. Jan Baumbach, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert from the University of Hamburg, the project aims to reduce the high false-positive rates associated with traditional CRC (colorectal cancer) screening and develop a more targeted and cost effective screening programme.

Three APC projects funded in latest round of the SFI Frontiers for the Future programme
30 May 2023Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris, TD, has today announced 62 grants valued at €42 million to support research across 13 Higher Education Institutions. This programme was funded in collaboration with the Children’s Health Foundation (CHF) and Geological Survey Ireland (GSI).
