Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience in the Western Gateway Building

This is a landmark time in the Department’s history as it is has recently moved to its new teaching and research facilities in the Western Gateway Building. The new teaching lab is named the Anatomy FLAME laboratory, with FLAME being acronymic for Facility for Learning Anatomy, Morphology & Embryology. This new state of the art facility offers huge potential for further development of teaching and research in the Department.

New research facilities are also coming online in the Western Gateway Building which coupled with the development of the PRTLI-V funded Neuroscience Hub in the same building (expected to open in early 2012) ensure that the Department is able to make significant research advances in the Neurosciences.

The Department has a long-standing focus on neuroscience research . The Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience has been active in its research laboratories in the Biosciences Institiute since its opening in 2002.The Neuroscience research programme comprises coherently linked projects in the fields of Development, Neural plasticity, Repair, Degeneration, Regeneration, Behaviour, Disease pathogenesis and progression.

The research equipment and research laboratories in the department are of an exceptional standard.  A range of high precision brightfield, fluorescence, electron, confocal microscopes and imaging systems, which are fundamental to its research work have been built up over the years. The department established its Imaging Centre as a means by which other departments in UCC and outside users have access to its specialised equipment and expertise.
