Welcome from our Head of School

Mathematics is the language of Science. The great George Boole, whose bicentenary occurred in 2015, was the first Professor of Mathematics at this University.  The School of Mathematical Sciences at UCC is made up of Departments of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics. It is part of the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science.

The academic mission of the School reaches across the University, its research institutions and affiliated Medical and Dental Hospitals.  On the teaching side, we maintain an extensive curriculum serving the needs of a diverse student population — more than 2,750 students. Our deliveries include accredited undergraduate and post-graduate programmes in Actuarial Science. The School has a tradition of community outreach particularly focused on stimulating interest in Mathematics among pre-University students. The Boole2School (B2S) project is a recent development in this area.

The School is committed to the realisation of excellence in research. The themes and areas of strength span a range of areas within the broad fields of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics. Some of the research is pure and theoretical while other work is more application and data analytic in nature.
