Join Our Global Study on Youth-Led Climate Litigation!

23 Sep 2024

The Youth Climate Justice project launches the Global Study on Youth-Led Climate Action.

Are you a child or young person taking action for the climate through the courts? We want to hear your story!

At University College Cork in Ireland, our 'Youth Climate Justice' project explores how children and young people like you are transforming human rights and climate justice through litigation.

We want to learn how children and young people like you are using the courts to advocate for climate action. Your experiences and ideas are important to help us understand how these legal processes can be more accessible to children and young people. By sharing your story, you can help create better guidelines and strategies for future climate cases involving children and young people.

Some of the questions we want to explore are:

  • How do children, young people and adults work together in climate justice cases?
  • How are courts reacting to this new wave of youth-led climate cases?
  • How do lawyers and judges think about children’s rights in these cases?
  • What does this trend of youth-led climate action mean for children’s rights around the world?

What Does Participation Involve?

If you decide to join our study, you’ll be invited to take part in a 40-60-minute online interview with a member of our research team. If you agree, we’ll record the conversation, so we don’t miss anything you say.

For this part of the study, we’re looking for people who were between 8 and 25 years old when their climate court case started.

Later, we’ll also talk to lawyers and judges to hear what they think about working with children and young people in these cases.

Taking part is totally up to you. You can skip any questions, stop the conversation whenever you want, or decide not to be part of the study within two weeks if you change your mind. When we present the results of the study, we’ll use pretend names to keep your identity private. Plus, there will be compensation for your participation and for dedicating your time to this study.

We hope that what we learn will become part of a guide to make sure children’s rights are ensured in climate litigation cases. We’ll also share what we find out in books and articles for different audiences.
