Date of incident: 10 Dec. 1920

Sources: CWN, 18 Dec. 1920; Military Inquests, WO 35/155A/31 (TNA); Application of David Medalie to Irish Grants Committee (CO 762/161/4/ 2727).

Note: Sarah Medalie died of a heart attack owing to severe shock when she was suddenly awakened by the frenzied behaviour of a search party of British soldiers with flashlights during curfew hours. The soldiers broke into the premises occupied by Medalie and her husband David, a wholesale general dealer’s shop at 23 Tuckey Street in Cork city; the troops ransacked the shop while looking for IRA men. Medalie died almost immediately. She left a husband, four children, and three grandchildren, with the grandchildren ranging in age from 4 years to 11 months.
