Civilian Carl Johansen

Civilian Carl Johansen (aged about 25), (Custom House Quay, Cork)

Date of incident: 1 Dec. 1920

Sources: II, 2 Dec. 1920; CE, 2, 3, 4, 6 Dec. 1920; FJ, 3 Dec. 1920; CWN, 11 Dec. 1920; Military Inquests, WO 35/152/38 (TNA).

Note: Johansen, a Norwegian sailor visiting the port of Cork, was shot in the abdomen at the Custom House Quay on 1 December 1920, and another civilian was also seriously wounded. These casualties appear to have been the result of errant shooting in the early hours of the morning by members of the crown forces during the curfew. See II, 2 Dec. 1920. Johansen’s intestines ‘were almost completely severed in two places’. See CE, 2 Dec. 1920. He died the next day of his wounds at the South Infirmary. A ship’s fireman, he had come to Cork on the SS Tonjer. See CE, 3, 4 Dec. 1920.
