Student Garda Vetting
Welcome to UCC. As part of your acceptance to UCC and in accordance with the Acts all students who wish to undertake a work placement and/or activities that bring them into contact with children and/or vulnerable adults as part of their programme of study, will be subject to UCC’s Vetting process. Reference information, including how to contact us, can be found below.

Step 1: Applicant accepts place in a UCC programme of study where vetting is a requirement;
Step 2: Upon completion of registration, Garda Vetting information emailed to students;
Step 3: Students to obtain certified true copies of Proof of Address and Proof of ID.;
Step 4: Students engage with Garda Vetting link issued by UCC and upload certified documents. (Incl. Overseas Police Clearance Certificate, if applicable);
Step 5: Admissions Office verifies uploaded certified documents;
Step 6: National Vetting Bureau (NVB) invites student, by email, to complete online vetting application;
Step 7: Admissions Office reviews and submits vetting application to the NVB;
Step 8: NVB processes applications. Disclosures made available to the Admissions Office;
Step 9: Where a Disclosure is NIL, Admissions Office updates student record and vetting is indicated as being cleared and complete. Process complete. No further action required from student;
Step 10: Where a Disclosure exists, student is contacted by the Admissions Office to verify accuracy of the Disclosure;
Step 11: Referred to relevant Department / College.
Certified Proof of ID & Proof of Address Documents
When uploading your required certified documents as part of the Student Garda Vetting process, you must present with one certified proof of ID document AND one certified proof of address document from the list below.
Certified Proof of ID – One Document Required
- Passport
- Irish NDLS Driving Licence/Permit (new credit card format only)
- National Age Card issued by An Garda Siochana (must be accompanied with a birth certificate)
Certified Proof of Address – One Document Required
All certified proof of address documents must be in your name and dated within the last six months.
- UCC Letter of Attendance
- Letter of offer for course/programme (current address needs to be on it)
- Bank Statement (NVB does not accept Revolut / digital banking statements)
- Utility bill
Your ID and proof of address can be certified by one of the following:
- An Garda Síochána
- Practicing Chartered and Certified Public Accountants
- Notaries Public / Practising Solicitors
- Embassy / Consular staff
- Regulated Financial or Credit Institute
- Justice of the Peace
- Commissioner of Oaths
- Medical Doctor
- School Principal/Teacher
* A certified copy of a document is a copy of an original document which is certified as a true copy by an authorised person

Overseas Police Clearance Certificate
Only required if you resided outside of Ireland for a period of six months or more in total, age 18 years or over. This Certificate should state that you had no convictions recorded against you while residing in this jurisdiction. (You may be required to present with more than one PCC, if you have resided in multiple countries).

There may be costs for you associated with this.
If the Police Clearance Certificate is not issued in English, the student must provide a certified translation.
As this certificate can take some time to get, you shouldn't delay commencing the process. If it applies in your case, please proceed with the UCC Vetting process. and you can follow on with the Police Clearance Certificate.
UCC’s vetting remains valid for the duration of your studies, for which the vetting was undertaken.
The following exceptions apply to this:
- BA Early Years and Childhood Studies – students are re-vetted after year three.
- Re-vetting is required in instances where a student has advised the University that there are changes to their vetting circumstances since their original vetting status, e.g. convictions or pending cases
