Join Peer Support

Recruitment

Recruitment of UCC Peer Support Leaders (PSLs) for 2024/25 has now opened.

What do Peer Support Leaders do?

The Peer Support programme works from the simple idea that students develop a vast amount of knowledge and a unique perspective relating to the student experience of UCC during their time here, and passing on that information to new students will benefit their transition into university and UCC as a whole. Therefore every incoming 1st year and undergraduate international student in UCC is linked to a PSL. A Peer Support Leader is one of the first people new students will meet during orientation and will be their guide on their first day in UCC. Throughout the year PSLs keep periodic contact with their students, ensuring they settle into life in UCC and become a part of the university community.

Why should you join Peer Support?

A few of the many reasons for getting involved in Peer Support are highlighting below:

  • Upon fulfilling the criteria you are awarded a UCC Works Award
  • Volunteering experience for your CV
  • You will gain invaluable training and skills relating to leadership, teamwork, time management, presentation skills, public speaking, etc.
  • A chance to help your fellow student through this difficult transitional period
  • Become part of a wider community of students from every course in the university

What experience is required?

While previous voluntary work may be helpful to you as a PSL, it is not a requirement. We are simply looking for enthusiastic students who are willing to commit to helping their peers. All of the required skillsets to be successful in the role will be covered in the training process.

What commitment is required?

To become a PSL you will need to complete 2 days of training - a 1 day session which is offered on a variety of dates throughout April, May and August and a final training day just prior to commencing orientation.

As a PSL you will volunteer at a minimum of 2 days of orientation. You will then continue ongoing contact via email with your assigned students throughout the year.

How do I apply?

The application process is quite simple, there is an online form to be filled out which will be followed by a brief 5-10 minute interview in late Feb/early March. Applications close at midnight Wednesday, February 21st
