Prizes and Scholarships

The Aodán Ó Donnchadha Memorial Prize

The Final Medical class of 1990 subscribed to a fund for the provision of an annual prize to commemorate their late classmate Aodán Ó Donnchadha. The Extern for the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health will assess the best Paediatric projects and decide who should be awarded the prize, if necessary aided by advice from members of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health. Shortlisted candidates should keep all information gathered as this may be required by the External examiner. The award will be made provided the student chosen fulfils the other criteria:

  • The prize will be called "The Aodán Ó Donnchadha Memorial Prize".
  • The Academic Council considers that a sufficiently high standard has been attained.
  • The successful candidate was a student at University College Cork for the three years immediately preceding the Final Medical Examination.
  • He/she has taken and passed the whole of the Final Medical Examination and has taken each module for the first time.

RGG Barry Prize

The friends, past students and admirers of Dr R.G.G. Barry, MD, FRCP, FRCPI, DCH, who was the first Professor of Paediatrics from 1970-1977, subscribed a fund for the provision of an annual prize to be known as "The R.G.G. Barry Prize in Paediatrics". The prize is awarded to a candidate who has obtained one of the highest marks in paediatrics at the Final Medical Examination.  The award is made by the Extern Examiner in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health provided that:

  • The Academic Council considers a sufficiently high standard to have been attained.
  • The successful candidate has been a student in University College Cork, for the three years immediately preceding the Examination.
  • He/she had not passed the Third University Examination in Medicine more than three years before the Summer of the year in which the Final Medical Examination (Part II) is taken, provided that, in the case of a student who has interrupted his/her medical studies at any time after passing the Third University Examination in Medicine to proceed to the BSc Degree or to pursue any other non-medical programme of study approved by the Faculty of Medicine, the period devoted to such non-medical studies shall not be counted when computing the interval between his/her passing of the Third University Examination in Medicine and Final Medical Examination (Part II).
  • He/she has taken and passed the whole of the Final Medical Examination (Part II) and has taken each subject of the examination for the first time.

Dr. Henry Hutchinson Stewart Scholarship and Prize in Paediatrics

Regulations for the Scholarship and Prizes, to be awarded annually:

  • The award of the Scholarship and Prizes will be based on the written examination in Paediatrics for the MB, BCh, and BAO degree examination in each of the NUI constituent universities and in the RCSI.
  • Up to three of the top students in the written examination in Paediatrics for the MB, BCh, and BAO degree examination in each of the NUI constituent universities and the RCSI are automatically put forward for the scholarship and prizes. In NUI institutions where the examination for Paediatrics is taken in the penultimate year of the MB, BCh, and BAO degree examination, up to three of the top candidates in that examination are put forward as candidates for the scholarship and prizes.
  • The recommendation about the award of the scholarship and prizes will be determined by an Agreed Extern Examiner, having considered the submissions of all the candidates.
