October 9, 2025 - Notification from Mary O'Grady, Secretary, UCC Retired Staff Association

Dear Colleagues,
Many thanks to all that attended the Retired Staff Event today in the Council Room.  We had two very interesting presentations and special thank you to the presenters.
We first had a presentation from Michael Mansfield and David Morgan on the UCC Cork-Singida Partnership. The Partnership was set up over 40 years ago by UCC staff and has contributed to the development of better health care provision in the Singida region of Tanzania. David and Michael spoke about the excellent projects that have been developed over the years providing a full range of both out patient and inpatient services to a population of about 400,000 people. Since 2020, the focus has been on development of health centres in remote areas of Singida Province. See attached again full details on this  Charity. The Partnership is currently in financial difficulties and in dire need of additional income to carry out the excellent work in the region.
David  Morgan and Mike Mansfield are requesting RSA members to make a contribution to this worthy charity by either clicking and completing the Payment Authority Form on the Cork Singida website:
https://www.ucc.ie/en/singida/do  Save the form and send as an email attachment to payrollqueries@ucc.ie
You can also directly email payrollqueries@ucc.ie and request to have a contribution deducted from your pension for this worthy cause.
You can also just write a note re same and post to Payroll Office, University College Cork
Our second presentation today was from Lucy O Leary from Martin Harvey Solicitors Office. Lucy delivered an excellent presentation on the difficult subject of making a will and went through all the concepts surrounding will making and inheritance.
The presentation slides have been sent to members of the UCC Retired Staff Association.
Link to Introduction-to-Will-Making-Presentation  PowerPoint Presentation.
You can contact Lucy at lucy.oleary@martinharvey.ie
Our next RSA Event will be on 13th November, 2025 . Our presenter Lal Hetherington will present on the importance of movement and exercise as we age. She will demonstrate on Chair yoga and the Amerta movement which we can all practice, as the winter weather approaches and our ability to exercise outdoors becomes more difficult. I will forward further details in a few weeks.

Please note the Annual Xmas Lunch for UCC Retired Staff will be in Aras Na Mac Leinn on Friday 5th December.

September 13, 2025 - Notification from Mary O'Grady, Secretary, UCC Retired Staff Association

Dear Colleagues,
On Thursday last, September 11, members of the R.S.A. visited Nano Nagle Place
Background:
Nano Nagle Place is a hidden gem in the heart of the city. This beautifully restored heritage site celebrates Nano Nagle, an 18 th century pioneer who dedicated her life to education, social justice, and caring for the poor. Known, as "The Lady of the Lantern", she defied the Penal Laws by secretly founding schools across Cork city for Catholic children. At the time Catholic Education was illegal in Ireland. Determined that her work would continue, Nano established the Presentation Sisters in 1775 an order that went on to bring education and social inclusion to communities across the world.
On Thursday, all present enjoyed refreshments in the Good Day Deli, a sustainable cafe which serves fresh, locally sourced food. The cakes served were fab and there wasn't a plate empty as we left.
Mary Daly, was our tour guide in the Museum. She brought the tour to life with her in-depth knowledge and humorous stories  of the life and times of  Nano Nagle together with all the artefacts we had time to browse. The engaging displays and digital storyboards helped  us connect past and present and everyone present got a deep understanding of the unique contribution of Nano Nagle to Cork in 18 th century Ireland.
Afterwards, we had time to wander around the peaceful walled gardens and visit Nano Nagle's tomb in the 18th century graveyard.
All present, thoroughly enjoyed the RSA event.
Please see some photos of our visit taken by Paul Roseingrave.
Further details and photos can be seen on the RSA webpage at Image Gallery | University College Cork
Our next RSA event will be on Thursday 9th October:
Martin Harvey Solicitors will present on Will Making, probate, inheritance tax etc. in the Council Room at 2.00pm.
I will forward further details in advance of the event.
Look forward to seeing a good attendance.
Kind regards
