Keraterpeton

How to recognise them

Only in museums! Bones are black, like the surrounding sediment. Formerly referred to as the Jarrow Amphibians.

Fossil Info

Keraterpeton is an extinct type of small amphibian, about the size of an adult human's hand, that lived in lush swamps in Co. Kilkenny during the Carboniferous Period, about 310 million years ago. It had a long body like a salamander and a very long tail that made up two-thirds of its total body length.

Fun Fact

Keraterpeton had two sharp points extending back out of its skull, making it look like a little dragon - like Toothless from How to Train your Dragon!
