Penny Siopis is a multidisciplinary artist and an honorary professor at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. Her diverse artistic practice encompasses body politics, migration, history and memory, grief and shame, climate change and the relations between the human and non-human. All her explorations are characterised by her interest in what she calls the ‘poetics of vulnerability’. In 2018 Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa presented ‘This is a True Story’: Six Films (1997-2017) – a survey of the artist’s films. A retrospective of Siopis’ work Time and Again was shown at South African National Gallery, Cape Town and Wits Art Museum, Johannesburg in 2014 and 2015. Her work is represented in international collections including South African National Gallery; Tate, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Smithsonian Institution, Washington; Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the Art Institute of Chicago.
