Outline

Learning Objective

To determine the stages of communicative, socio-emotional and cognitive development in children with and without hearing loss Module Content:

This will include:

  • Understand from current research findings how a hearing loss can influence development in the areas of spoken language and literacy
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of evidence-based assessments used to evaluate the languages of D/deaf children, including bilingual deaf children
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the cognitive, social and educational challenges for children with and without hearing loss
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the effects of late-onset or acquired hearing loss on communication in children and adults.

A mission of the module is to engage a diverse group of allied health, educational and medical professionals in expanding and progressing their professional capacities in relation to hearing and balance related patient needs. A distinct benefit of the module is the opportunity for networking across the disciplines.

The duration of the course is three days.

There are two options for taking this module non credit bearing for CPD purposes as outlined here or credit bearing see (https://www.ucc.ie/en/ct6200/) for further information. Core modules (10 credits) are available annually and elective modules (5 credits) are available biannually.

CPD certificates will be issued upon completion of the module through canvas catalog UCC’s CPD platform. To register for the course you will be required to register with UCC open. All lecture materials will be made available to you on Canvas Catalog.
