30 January - ‘Other' Voices: Children and Music within Asylum Seeker Accommodation

Dr Ailbhe Kenny, University of Limerick

ISS21

30 January 2020, 1-2pm
O’Rahilly Building, Room 255

Asylum seeker accommodation centres are particular contexts where both childhood and music are experienced uniquely. There have been multiple legislative, political, academic, educational and media debates on the complex issues of asylum seeking, including accommodation. The cultural and artistic needs of asylum seekers have been largely ignored however and in particular those of the children of asylum seekers. This talk highlights the importance and relevance of the contexts for arts and cultural participation within asylum seeker accommodation settings, as well as the broader national and international contexts of young children living within such systems.
