27 February - Exploring Mens Sheds in South Kerry: spaces of social inclusion, wellbeing, and masculinities

Dr Ray O’Connor and Dr Richard Scriven, School of Geography

ISS21 REACT Research Cluster

Thursday 27th February, 1-2 p.m.
Venue:  ORB 255 (MBA room)

This seminar considers the different social features of Men's Sheds as distinct spaces that foster engagement, activity, and community purpose for (older) men in rural areas. The significant growth of the men's shed movement in Ireland is examined through fieldwork conducted with four Men's Sheds in South Kerry. Preliminary findings indicate that these groups serve as inclusive spaces that enable individual and collective wellbeing, as well as providing opportunities to use and develop skills while contributing to the locality. The project was funded by Skellig Centre for Research & Innovation (Skellig CRI).
