Aidan Coffey

Biography

Aidan graduated from UCC with BSc and PhD degrees in Microbiology. He continued his research at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands before joining Teagasc Moorepark in 1996. Since relocating to Munster Technological University in 2002, he developed research on food microbiology and biocontrol of pathogenic microorganisms, emphasising bacteriophages. He was appointed Adjunct Professor at the School of Microbiology at UCC in 2016, and also Professor at Munster Technological University in the Department of Biological Sciences. He also holds an MA (music) and a DSc from the NUI, the latter in recognition of his published works, which include over 200 peer-reviewed research papers, a book and three new virus genus proposals ratified by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses and a new virus subfamily officially named “Corkvirinae”. He is a co-inventor on three patents and has directed over 30 PhD theses.
