Course Outline

The purpose of this module is to assist students in the development of enhanced team leadership skills through an exploration of models of team leadership and a greater understanding of team dynamics. It will also help students to address conflict in teams, motivate teams and enhance team performance.

Students will explore a range of topics including:

  • Introduction to leadership
  • Introduction to groups and teams
  • Understanding team composition and dynamics
  • Models of team Leadership – theory and practice
  • Team roles and interpersonal communication
  • Organisation and group culture
  • Conflict in teams
  • Motivating teams
  • Appraising and enhancing team performance

The module will be particularly valuable to managers in any sector who have had little or no formal management training and want to strengthen their managerial capabilities through the completion of a formal third level course that is highly practical in its orientation. It is also suitable for people working in non-managerial roles who wish to improve their career development in preparation for future management roles.

Course Practicalities

The programme will be delivered partly online and in a UCC classroom over 8 weeks. This will include 6 weekly online sessions which will include interactive work and associated reading and learning activities. It will also include two classroom-based Saturdays at UCC.

Additionally, students will engage in two, one hour coaching sessions to enhance learning and deepen understanding of course work and its relation to the world of work.

Assessment

The module is assessed by continuous assessment in the form of (a) 4,000-word work-based portfolio and (b) group presentation.

Requirements

Applications will be accepted from candidates who:

  • Are over 21 years of age by 1 January of the year of application
  • Hold a minimum Level 7 qualification with at least a second-class honours grade 1 or equivalent professional qualification.

AND

  • Have a minimum of two years’ relevant work experience as deemed appropriate by the programme Academic Director.

RPL: Non-graduates with at least three years’ professional experience in a relevant senior people leadership role will also be considered for admission through UCC’s recognition of prior learning process.

English Language Requirement: All applicants whose first language is not English are expected to have a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, with no individual section lower than 6.0.

Standard fee: €850

 

HCI Applicants

This programme is HCI funded. Eligible applicants may apply for this funding which will cover 50% of the course fees. You can see eligibility criteria here. HCI Funded appliants will only have to pay 50% of the course fee: €425.

 

Please note funding for this programme is limited and early application is advised. 

 

How To Apply

Before applying applicants need to be aware of the IT student checklist below before applying:

  • You will need access to a laptop or desktop computer running a modern supported operating system with all software updates.
  • Some of UCC’s services (e.g. the Canvas Virtual Learning Environment) link to an external site and also have mobile apps for iOS and Android Devices that you may wish to use as part of your studies.  However, we recommend using your desktop web browser for submission of assessments.
  • You should always use the most current version of your preferred browser. In general, we recommend the Chrome Web browser (Important Note: Internet Explorer will not work with Canvas).
  • We recommend a reliable broadband connection with at least 7Mbps or more.
  • You will require an Office suite of software (Microsoft Office or equivalent) and a PDF reader. You should always use the latest version of this software.  All UCC students will have access to Office 365 which includes software such as Word/Excel/Powerpoint etc. once registered.

During your online application you will be required to upload the following documents:

  • Proof of Identity e.g. Birth Cert or Passport
  • Application Statement 
  • HCI Subsidy Form
  • English Language Test Report [if applicable]
  • 50% of the fees are also required to complete your application. 

HCI Funding:

  • Please note there are two options to choose from when applying. If you choose the HCI funding option you will be asked to confirm your eligibility. Please note this does not guarantee that you will be awarded this funding. You will still need to pay the 50% fee up front and our finance team can provide invoices should this be paid by your company. 
 

Non-HCI Funding:

  • Please note there are two options to choose from when applying. If you choose the non-HCI funding option you will be able to a.) pay your fees b.) fill out the company sponsorship form which will go to your company for payment.
