Leading figures from film, sport and activism were awarded with honorary degrees by University College Cork (UCC) last night. Jeremy Irons, Adi Roche, Lord David Puttnam and Dominic Casey were all recognised for their achievements at a special ceremony in UCC’s Aula Maxima.

UCC generates €3.2 million every day for the Irish economy
University College Cork (UCC) generates €3.2 million every day for the Irish economy, according to a new report published last night. The independently verified report, Economic and Societal Impact of University College Cork, shows that the University supports almost 1 in every 13 jobs in Cork city and county and provides a return of €6 for every €1 of state investment.

Ireland’s Toy Library promotes sustainable Christmas giving
The Toy Library offers a free way for families to donate and find toys this Christmas season. A UCC researcher is encouraging families to join the ‘Circular Christmas’ movement and helping to reduce the environmental impact of toys across Ireland. The toy industry is the most plastic intensive industry in the world.

Major research to investigate legacy of the Vikings in Europe
UCC researcher to lead European-wide project investigating how ideas, misinformation and extremist narratives about the Vikings spread. Dr Birkett awarded €2m European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant to lead research on the legacy of the Vikings. NorseMap will adapt large-scale citizen science mapping to the humanities.
