UCC physicist awarded Fellowship for semiconductor research
07 Dec 2023- Dr. Christopher Broderick’s research will produce an enhanced understanding of new capabilities in nanowires - filaments of semiconductor material one-thousandth the breadth of a human hair.
- Dr. Broderick is the fourth UCC scientist to receive a Royal Society-Science Foundation Ireland University Research Fellowship.

UCC partnered in new €70 million research centres on climate and sustainable food
29 Nov 2023- The funding will bring together academics, industry and policymakers across the Irish Government, UK Government and Northern Ireland Government Departments to collaborate on common challenges such as food sustainability and climate change.
- Professor Mairead Kiely is the Nutrition and Health Platform lead in the Co-Centre for Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems.
- Dr Jean O’Dwyer will lead the Sustainable Communities and Livelihoods Research Challenge within the Climate+ Co-Centre.

Newborn brain screener from UCC spin-out company CergenX awarded €6.7 million funding
28 Nov 2023A new technology to screen newborns for brain injury has been awarded €6.7million in funding from the Disruptive Technology Innovation Fund (DTIF). The major investment will support scientists and engineers to advance brain health monitoring for newborn babies. The Irish Centre for Maternal and Child Health Research (INFANT) at University College Cork with UCC spin-out CergenX and Evervault were awarded €6.7million for the Newborn Brain Screener (NBS) project which will develop a novel platform to detect abnormal brain activity in infants soon after birth through an automated AI assessment.

Virtual reality gaming promotes men’s health

- This is the first time virtual reality gaming has been used to promote men’s health.
- The study was conducted in collaboration with nine GAA clubs in Ireland.
