Women's Studies at UCC
A thriving, interdisciplinary programme
The MA in Women’s Studies is an interdisciplinary programme, with students gaining insights from academics across the College of Arts Celtic Studies and Social Sciences as well as from the College of Business and Law. Students develop a grounding in feminist theory and research while also examining gender and society through a multidisciplinary lens. Staff from over ten different academic departments contribute to the MA, allowing each student to develop a unique MA experience. The programme is tailored to suit each student's specific area of academic interest and educational background. Proposals are also welcome from students interested in working with a supervisor to develop a PhD project in the broad area of Women’s Studies.
The UCC campus is a safe, welcoming one. UCC has obtained an Athena Swan Bronze Award for Gender Equality, recognizing its effort to promote gender equality in education. UCC has been named University of Sanctuary in 2018, and recently opened a new Equality, Diversity and Inclusion unit. The campus hosts very active students' societies, including the UCC Feminist Society and the UCC LGBT Society. UCC also hosts the Casilac (Centre for Advanced Studies in Languagues and Culture) Research Cluster on Violence, Conflict and Gender, and the Institute for Social Science in the 21st Century (ISS21), which includes a Family, Gender and Sexualities research cluster.
